The Theory Test
Warning, only book your theory test through the official gov.uk/book-theory-test website, other 3rd party sites may charge you more and it may take longer to book.
Before you can book your practical driving test you will need to pass the theory test. You can learn to drive while practicing for your theory as long as you have your provisional licence.
The test fee is £25 and you must take your photocard licence with you. The theory test is made up of a multiple-choice part and a hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. If you pass one part and fail the other you’ll fail the whole test, and you’ll need to take both parts again.
The multiple-choice part last for 57 minutes and you need to score at least 43/50.
The hazard perception part comprises of 14 video clips of everyday road scenes containing at least one 'developing hazard', however one clip will feature 2 'developing hazards'. You will be shown a short video at the start of this test explaining how it works. For each hazard there is a maximum score of 5 points, the earlier you notice the hazard the more you will score. You need to score at least 44/75. The system is designed to notice patterns or repetitive clicking and you will score 0 for that clip.
You will receive your result straight away.
